Porter Back at Practice, Happy Birthday MartellPosted on December 04, 2013 by Jeremy Hyman
Throughout the course of the year, there are some days where not too much happens at a Wizards practice. Today wasn't one of those days.
And the starters were given a "light" day, with the reserves playing a scrimmage during the second half of practice. But today had some encouraging news and some humor mixed in...
The most encouraging sign from the day was seeing Otto Porter back out on the court and running up and down. According to his teammates, he's looked good in the scrimmages and could be a key contributor in the very near future.
Marcin Gortat talked about Porter and what he's seen of him since returning to the practice floor:
After raving about Porter, Martell Webster moved in to be interviewed, but not before Gortat serenaded him to the tune of "Happy Birthday" as today Webster celebrated his 27th birthday.
The joys of going 7-2 over the last nine games and evening your record to 9-9 seem to be apparent.
But back to Porter, who would not give an exact timetable on his return but did say he's feeling better and that it felt great to run up and down again.
He was asked if he thought he would return on Friday, but said "I don't know about Friday, but I feel like I'm getting more in shape."
Randy Wittman said he would have a better answer on Porter's return after tomorrow's practice, because that would be the first time Porter would run through back-to-back practices this season.
As mentioned before, he's been medically cleared to play, but right now it's more about getting him in shape and conditioned for an NBA game. He's also still trying to pick up all of the plays and concepts, because he missed almost two full months of playing with his teammates.
We also heard from the birthday boy himself, Martell Webster, who talked about having a lighter day at practice and touched on having Otto Porter back.
As expected, the players were in a good mood now that they have seemingly turned their season around and have a bright future ahead. With that said, they know they can't get complacent and be satisfied as a .500 team. It will be back to business tomorrow.
The Wizards will practice again on Thursday and then host the Milwaukee Bucks at Verizon Center on Friday night at 7pm.Posted in: Sports
