Porter Shows True Character

Posted on October 08, 2013 by Jeremy Hyman

I haven't known Otto Porter for long, but after reading this WaPo letter to the editor, this story didn't surprise me.  It's not a long story and is worth  a read, because in an age when athletes are so often portrayed in a negative light, these stories remind us that good deeds still happen.

A Vienna man, Michael Stein, was having lunch last week at a local sandwich shop when he spotted Wizards' F Otto Porter walk into the shop.  There was a homeless man just outside asking the patrons entering if they could spare a sandwich.

From the article:

"After about 25 minutes, Otto Porter Jr., the Georgetown basketball star and the Washington Wizards' newest first-round draft pick, drove up, hopped out of his car and entered the shop. Mr. Porter soon exited with his sandwich and drink - but also with a sandwich, a bag of chips and a drink for the homeless man. Mr. Porter then sat down next to the man, and they both enjoyed their sandwiches while making small talk."

I met Porter on draft night and spent a good deal of time with him backstage during his media circuit. Afterwards, I wrote this about him:

Another high-character individual whose maturity level can be noticed the first time you meet him.  As the Wizards continue this identity switch, they attained another player who fits the mold of the new breed of Wizards basketball.  A team-first guy with a high IQ, good morals, a family man and a genuinely good person.

A lot of times these types of things get written, but to see an act like this brings words to real life.  The fact that he did this without looking for any attention just goes to show what kind of person Porter really is.

A great human being.

*Also would like to thank Michael Stein for sharing this story with the public.
