Wizards Prep for Brooklyn & Brazil

Wizards vs. Nets | Oct 8 | 7pm | Verizon Center | NBATV | 1500AM/106.7FM

The time has come.  Basketball is coming back to Verizon Center!  Sort of.

The Wizards will welcome the Brooklyn Nets to Verizon Center to kick off their preseason slate on Tuesday night at 7pm (TV: NBATV / Radio: 106.7 FM/1500 AM).  While the game doesn't mean anything in the standings, it will be nice to see the team play against somebody other then themselves.

The Wiz have officially been practicing since last Saturday (Sep 28), but they held voluntary workouts throughout September and have been playing against each other for about five weeks now.  Tuesday night will be the first chance this season where they get to test their talents against enemy colors and play in front of a crowd.

What should we expect?

We're not exactly sure how many minutes all of the regulars will see, but it should be enough for them to work up a sweat and start building chemistry with one another.  It will be a good chance for head coach Randy Wittman to start playing with his lineups and figure out which combinations work best.

It's unclear who will get the start at center in place of the injured Emeka Okafor, but this game will give us our first glimpse of how the Wizards plan to adapt without their defensive anchor down low. We could see them start off playing Nene at the "5" and Jan Vesely at the "4", with a number of combinations to play off the bench.   They've used that lineup in camp and it could be one they open the preseason with.

What is clear is that Otto Porter (hip) will be held out and it is unlikely that Trevor Booker (knee) will suit up for the opener.  Booker has begun doing some non-contact drills and says he's getting closer to a full return, but Porter has been limited to just cardio work and has yet to get on the floor.  They join Okafor (neck) and Chris Singleton (foot) on the Wizards injury list.

Since we are still in preseason, the Wizards have four extra players on the roster.  Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Josh Childress, Xavier Silas, and D'or Fischer are all expected to be in uniform and could see action on the floor.

After the game, the Wizards will takeoff for Rio de Janeiro where they will play the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, October 12th at 5pm.  There are plenty of activities and practices planned from Rio, so stay tuned to both WashingtonWizards.com & MonumentalNetwork.com for exclusive content from the trip.
