Mini-Camp: Day 3

9:30 pm: We wrapped up Day 3 and the last two-a-day of mini-camp.  A good day of practices and definitely saw some improvement from Tuesday.  I think I've mentioned it before but it bears repeating that Otto Porter is very long and seems to get his hands in the passing lanes often.  Very reminiscent of Trevor Ariza, who is probably the Wizards best perimeter defender.   Porter has also shown the ability to consistently knock down mid-range jumpers, which is how he was advertised coming out of Georgetown.  I've seen him hit plenty of three-pointers in drills, but he hasn't taken many in the scrimmages so we'll see if that's something that he'll grow more accustom to as time goes on.

The highlight of tonight's practice might have been Devin Booker's three-point play, where he threw down a monster slam while absorbing contact.  His older brother Trevor was on hand to watch some of the practice, but I believe he left before the dunk.

Big Book was not the only Wizard at tonight's practice, but Bradley Beal and Garrett Temple were both on hand watching the team play and playing a few games of their own during timeouts and half-court drills.  They took part in some friendly games of around-the-world, which we captured a few moments of during a scrimmage timeout.

Now we wait to see what the final Summer League roster will look like before we depart for Vegas tomorrow night.  The schedule for tomorrow has practice from 1-3 and then an evening flight out to Vegas.  Most of the guys on the Mini-Camp roster will come out to Vegas but there could be a few cuts for numbers reasons.

5:05 pm: Checking back in at practice #2 of the day.  A lot has happened since the morning practice, though not much of it relates to the Mini-Camp.  The team officially announced the signing of free-agent point guard Eric Maynor and announced the re-signing of guard Garrett Temple earlier this afternoon and just as this practice began the official word came down that Martell Webster will be back and was signed to a multi-year deal!  This has everyone feeling good around the organization and now we can all get back to the Mini-Camp and focus on Summer League.

Before practice got underway, former T'Wolves teammates Sam Cassell and Gary Trent had a few 1-on-1 battles.  Trent will be assisting to coach under Cassell, who will take over the head coaching duties out in Vegas.

We also had a Trevor Booker and Garrett Temple sighting as it appeared that they had just finished a workout.  Both should be in Vegas working out along with many of the Wizards regulars once the Summer League team makes its way out there.

As for practice, we've seen a lot of similar drills as the previous practices.  More practice in the transition game and teaching the squad to get out and run off every rebound.  We should see a scrimmage at the end today, but we'll see what's in store for the remainder of the time.

11:15 am: After two practices yesterday, the team looked a little sluggish at first this morning but the coaches got on them and then the intensity picked up.  So far this may be the best practice yet as the guys get more familiar with the drills and the system.  There was a brief teaching point on jump-balls and how to get positioned properly.  Those are the little things that can sometimes win a game or two during the season.  The team also went through some end-of-game scenarios and executed very well.  Each team (blue vs. white) came out of a timeout with limited time and knocked down a shot to tie or win a game.  The more you practice these things the easier they become in real game situations when the tension is high and sometimes things get all out of whack.

Also saw another Glen Rice, Jr. one-handed slam.  Never really gets old.  He should not only score while in Vegas but also get on the highlight reel.

We should have about 30 min left of the morning practice and then we'll be back tonight for practice #2 of the day.

10:15 am: Back for another practice on the Verizon Center practice court.  There are two more practices scheduled for today and then one for tomorrow before leaving for Vegas.  So far it's been the same routine as usual with the first part of practice all walkthrough on some new defensive sets and then a team stretch.

The bigger news of the day will come at the end of practice when Eric Maynor and Garrett Temple are scheduled to be available to speak to the media for the first time.  We'll have all the coverage on WashingtonWizards.com and MonumentalNetwork.com.
