11:30 pm: Another day in the books for the Wizards Summer League team. This time, two practices and Summerfest were in store which allowed the fans to get their first live look at the team. After about a 90 minute night practice, the team got into some live 5-on-5 action which gave the fans some real good stuff to watch. Rather then talk more about it, let's see it. Here are some of the highlights of the night:
Glen Rice, Jr. Dunk
Vesely Steal & Score
These were some of the highlights of the night, but overall there was still some sloppiness to the scrimmage which is to be expected at this point of the process. Most of the players out there are playing together for the first time so naturally it will take some time before seeing more cohesiveness on the court. But the effort has been there and that is one thing you can't teach.
Two practices are scheduled again for tomorrow (Wednesday) so we should be back for another full day of updates.
7:25 pm: Scrimmage is underway here on the main court and we've already seen some good things. Jan Vesely showed some excellent defensive prowess, getting a steal which led to a 2-on-1 fast break and a Vesely alley-oop! The next highlight of the night came from Glen Rice, Jr. who threw down a monster one-handed dunk.
6:40 pm: The team just moved out onto the main court where the Wizards fans greeted them with a warm ovation. Practice now continues with drills before the 5-on-5 scrimmage, which should be coming up soon. A lot of local Georgetown fans here cheering on Otto Porter as this is their first chance to see the rookie as a member of the Wizards.

5:35 pm: We're back with practice #2. The first hour or so will be held on the practice court at Verizon Center and then the team will move to the main court for an open scrimmage apart of Wizards Summerfest. The event is open to the public or can be seen live on Monumental Network.
The start of tonight's practice saw the team going over how to defend different kind of screens along with dealing with double teams on the post. All walkthrough drills before the team stretch. The first hour should feature more fundamental drills before we get to the 5-on-5 scrimmage on the main court.
11:50 am: Winding down the morning practice with some 5-0 on drills here on the Verizon Center practice court. This sort of bookends the practice with sets and plays that will be installed for Vegas. While we began with walking through the sets, this could be called more of a run-through as they are going full speed but with no defense. Normally, once they get comfortable enough with the sets, they will then put a defensive team out there and run live 5-on-5.
In between the sets, there were a lot of odd-man rush type drills in the morning practice. They may start as a 2-on-1 drill, transform into a 3-on-2 break, and end up being a 4-on-3 drill. Again, a lot of running and a lot of practice in the transition game as that is something they continue to stress.
10:20 am: Hello friends, checking in from morning practice on Day 2 of Summer League Mini-Camp. Again the practice began with walking through some different sets and a lot of x's and o's talk. Have to keep in mind that a majority of the guys here have never been coached by the Wizards, so it's key to get the basics across before they go into game action this Saturday in Vegas.
The team then went into stretching before doing more fast-break drills. One point of emphasis the coaches continue to stress is that they want the philosophy to be that of a running team, hence the reason the fast-break drills at the beginning of each practice. They are trying to instill a running mentality so that it becomes more like second nature to grab a board and immediately think to get out on the break. With a lot of good athletes and athletic wings, that could be a real strength for this Summer League roster.
I'll check in again later this morning and then again this evening for practice #2 and Summerfest. Remember, Summerfest is free so come down and see the team scrimmage tonight!
